Emma Kane and Tatiana Rodriguez, REAL interns

Service Learning

Service Learning is a Guiding Principle of The REAL Program.

Community members, students, and educators have a chance to take part in the active education of youth while simultaneously addressing the concerns, needs, and hopes of the greater Lynn community. Through service-learning, high school and college students become actively contributing citizens and community members through helping children with homework, reading, math and enrichment literacy-based activities.

We are now seeing children who started as students becoming junior interns as they enter middle school, and teaching interns while they attend high school or college. Our students come from all kinds of communities; public and private schools; churches and synagogues; and places near and far. They help with the children directly and through technology in these unusual COVID times. The younger children really relate with the interns who act as role models, coaches, and tutors. REAL friendships are often made.

The REAL (Reading and Educational Assistance for Learning) Program's mission is to improve literacy in Lynn, Massachusetts.
